What is Anodized Aluminum?

Aluminum is a chemical element with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminum is the third most abundant element, and the most abundant metal, in the Earth's crust. It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminum is remarkable for the metal's low density, or light weight and for its ability to resist corrosion when oxidized a thin surface layer of aluminum oxide forms when the metal is exposed to air, effectively preventing further oxidation. Unlike other metals such as iron, the oxidation process doesn't weaken aluminum. The layer of 'aluminum oxide" is still part of the original aluminum and will not transfer to food or easily flake off under stress.   Aluminum is well tolerated by plants and animals, this makes it especially popular for food-service applications and industrial applications where durability is crucial. A fresh film of aluminum also serves as a good mirror, reflecting approximately 92% of visible light.  Among Aluminum's many wonderful properties it has about one-third the density and stiffness of steel.

Anodizing is an electrolytic oxidation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of metal parts. This oxide remains even when plated on wire and the wire is bent, because the metal particles are connected. Many metals are structurally weakened by the oxidation process, but not aluminum. Anodized aluminum surfaces, for example, are harder than most types of metal plating, this makes them less likely to crack and peel from aging and wear, and only susceptible to cracking from thermal stress. Many modern buildings use anodized aluminum in places where the metal framework is exposed to the elements. Anodized aluminum is also a popular material for making high-end cookware such as frying pans and pots. Anodizing increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance and can actually make the aluminum stronger and more durable.
